Tor Fly-bys
Sunday 8 January, 2012, 20:45
I'm quite pleased with this one. I've been reading Google's KML reference recently, and it occurred to me that it would be pretty neat of there was a link on each Tor Details page here that when clicked, would open Google Earth, fly you tor the tor in question, then fly you around it. I've just added a link to the tor page, but check this one of Yes Tor out: Click
Another Tor Visiting Milestone
Tuesday 27 December, 2011, 18:41
I've now visited all of the extreme tors on the Moor, not just the most Northery/Easterly/Southerly/Westerly ones, but the highest and the most isolated too. This follows two visits up to Okehampton to tick off Ashbury Tor last weekend, and Cleave Tor today. There is nothing to call between these two as the most northerly tor. The GPS track for both shows a maximum northing of 94070. One of them must be slightly further north than the other, but not by any amount that I can be bothered to measure!
Most Northerly: Ashbury Tor
or Cleave Tor
Most Westerly: Brent Tor
Highest: Yes Tor
Most Isolated: Fur Tor
Most Easterly: Bot Tor
Most Southerly: Western Beacon
Dartmoor Railway Again
Sunday 20 November, 2011, 22:08
Yesterday I cycled the full route of the Dartmoor Railway again, from Princetown all the way to Plymouth. I had done it before, but this time I thought I would take a little more time over it and explore a bit more. I still didn't find the London Bridge Corbels, but the viaducts in the Plym Valley are great. I had my GPS with me this time too, so route below:

More site improvements
Tuesday 25 October, 2011, 21:49
Development has been slow on the site recently, but yesterday I thought it would be a good idea to revamp the search page in the Views section. Previously it took your search keywords, rummaged through the database and presented a rather boring vertical column of photos and descriptions. I've just recoded the page so that now it gives you an OS map with pins at the photo locations, and a horizontal row with the corresponding photos underneath. Ideally, when you click on a pin, the corresponding photo will be highlighted, but that's for another night. I had to dust off my ASP hat for this. I did plan on recoding the whole thing in PHP, but it works well, so I left it in ASP.
Nice Comment on a Photo
Thursday 8 September, 2011, 22:45
Back in December I went for a walk near Burrator, the main objective being to bag Sheeps Tor and a couple of others on the slopes. Once I had done that and made it back down to the road that runs around Burrator Reservoir, I stumbled across this memorial:Yesterday that photo received a comment by the man who placed that memorial there in 1994 after the death of his wife. Unfortunately he had to fight South West Water for permission to do that (why on Earth would they refuse, several times?), but I'm glad he succeeded, and I'm honestly quite humbled that he took the time to stumble upon my photo and comment on it.
Bristol Balloon Festival
Sunday 14 August, 2011, 22:21
I thought I would introduce Lucy to an airshow this afternoon, but as she is terrified of loud noises, I thought I would do it gently and headed up to Bristol for the final mass balloon ascent of this year's festival. Sadly, despite the weather being great, they decided it was too windy (in fairness it probably was), so no balloons went up. The Red arrows did show up though, so the quiet intoduction I had planned ended up being not so quiet. After a brief spell in the car with her ear defenders on and her hands clamped firmly over those, she eventually came out and really enjoyed them.
Kitty Tor Walk
Sunday 7 August, 2011, 23:25
Together with Dan, Ilze, Julia, Lawrence and Mike, I walked 8.5 miles and visited 10 tors today. We walked from Lydford to Kitty Tor via the Rattlebrook tramway and back via Bleak House and Great Links Tor. Considering the weather forecast we were very lucky to get away with only two brief but intense downpours. Route below:
New CAD Tool
Thursday 14 July, 2011, 19:42
It's been a while since I've done any serious development on the site. The extreme stress of trying to find a new job obviously took precedence, but now that I've been happily employed at Paul Carpenter Associates for 6 weeks, it's time to relax a bit and start writing code again.
So I've just sat down and written a little AutoLisp routine for AutoCAD and Civil3D that will take any point you click in a drawing, and providing it gives a valid OS grid reference, it will open my mapping site at the exact point you clicked. Very handy, especially as my mapping site will link you onwards to many different mapping providers, geolocated photos, and much more. Download it here

Ubuntu 11.04 Upgrade
Sunday 1 May, 2011, 0:23
The laptop originally came with Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon installed, so yesterday's upgrade to 11.04 Natty Narwhal makes this the 7th upgrade I've done in three years. This one didn't go entirely to plan, much like the upgrade to Maverick, so I was forced to format/reinstall. Natty comes with the biggest and most controversial change to Ubuntu ever… the Gnome desktop environment has been dropped in favour of Unity:It takes a lot of getting used to, but I like it.
